The 2019 Hovey C² Red is a unique blend of three of our most popular varietals. Tempranillo serves as the foundation (85%) and is complimented by equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon (7.5%) and Barbera (7.5%). The result is very approachable with a mix of sweet and savory notes and nice tannins.

Tasting Notes
Our flagship Tempranillo delivers a strong foundation for this unique blend. The first thing you will notice is the beautiful medium red color with garnet sparkles. You might find the aroma to be rather "grapey" which is true of Tempranillos. Your first sip brings subtle hints of sour cherries from the Barbera which are complimented by the rich depth and juiciness of the Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet provides some tannings while the Barbera adds some brightness. Your second sip appears fruity and then come hints of dark cherry and licorice. The flavors linger as you contemplate your next sip. The complexity of this wine, and the different flavors you might experience are a nod to the quality of our fruit and the skill of our winemaker.
Vineyard Notes
The Tempranillo for this blend comes from both Rolleri Vineyards and Cavern Vineyards. The Barbera, as always, is from the Walker Vineyard in El Dorado county. The Cabernet Sauvignon is from our friends at Rasmussen Vineyards in Angels Camp.
Winemaker Notes
The story behind our C² blends: Chuck Hovey's mastery of both the art and science of winemaking are what set Hovey wines apart, and one of the reasons he loved the story behind the Hovey Tasting Room. The building was the original home of Albert Michelson who won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on measuring the speed of light (he discovered the “C²” in Einstein’s E=MC²). And that's why Chuck named his blend C² - as a nod to Albert Michelson. This wine is part art and part science...and disappears at the speed of light.

The 2019 Hovey C² Red blend pairs well with typical mediterranean favorites like grilled fish, roast lamb, veggie ratatouille or a lovely cheesy polenta.
