Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
When you uncork the bottle you're immediately transported deep into a wine cave with all its earthy elements. This wine tastes like where it's from, a limestone hillside steeped in tradition. Like all great Petite Sirahs there are hints of black tea, cocoa and peppercorns along with a unique minerality. Your firsts sip is a fun surprise as the flavor is a contrast from the aroma. Verdant and grassy this wine evolves over time and each sip exposes additional complexity.
Vineyard Notes
Our Petite Sirah fruit comes from the Dalton Vineyards out on Dogtown Road in Calaveras County. As is typical of this varietal, grapes are harvested later in the season giving them time to concentrate flavors.
Production Notes
Little known fact...Petite Sirah is an exceptionally rare grape with less than 10,000 planted acres worldwide, growing mainly in California. As one of the deepest and opaque red wines, it is higher in antioxidants than most other red wines. "Petite" refers to the tiny grapes that grow in tight clusters, not to being a lesser varietal.
Winemaker Notes
Our Dalton Petite Sirah is a departure from our previous vintages. We wanted to offer a more traditional, old world version of this varietal, and we think we succeeded. We suggest decanting this wine 30-60 minutes before enjoying to allow the wine time to open up and relax a bit, just like the rest of us.
Food Pairing Notes
Given the wines higher tannins, this varietal will do well matched with fat or umami and stands up to spice and herbs. A tandoori chicken, eggplant parmesan, or french onion soup would all be more than enjoyable alongside this wine.
