The fruit for our 2019 Petite Sirah comes from the Smith Family Vineyard.  This is a seriously big, bold red wine with higher tannins and acidity making is lovely and dry.  Elegant and sophisticated today, it will only get better with age (don't we all).

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The first thing you notice when you pour yourself a glass is how wonderfully dark this wine is - dark but not quite opaque. With your first breathe you sense black currants and black cherries. As you take your first sip you encounter bold plums with a soft subtly that you think would go nicely with a handful of salted cashews. As you make your way through the glass, the flavors are more defined and have a richness and enjoyable depth. Its dark color belies its soft finish, so much so you go ahead and reach for a second glass.
Vineyard Notes
The Smith Family Vineyard is at the end of Main Street Murhpys behind Val du Vino. It was originally planted in 1989 by Mark Skenfield who got his start with Chuck Hovey at Stevenot. Larry and Carla Smith who own the property were dear friends of Chuck.
Production Notes
These grapes are always late to ripen so their intensity is at the maximum for this variety. They tend to have "loose skins" which is important during the maceration process, before fermentation. We always allow the ferment to get hot to extract maximum flavor intensity – hence 5 years before release.
Winemaker Notes
Mark's first job was building a culvert and a stone wall at the original Stevenot Winery on Sheep Ranch Road. After that he started working with the vineyard manager, and eventually with Chuck. Both Mark and Chuck shared a passion for wine and music (Mark was actually a rock star and played with his band at The Viper Room in LA).
Food Pairing Notes
The richness of this wine goes well with unctuous dishes like short ribs, grilled steak or chicken mole.
